Tells: the eyes of a player

The eyes of a player can give away a lot of information about the strength of his hand. That is the reason why many players wear sunglasses at the table. This tell can be very powerful and gives you an idea of were you are at, before having to bet or getting a bet against you.

When the flop is being placed on the table, you should look your opponent straight in the eyes. Often you will notice that right after your opponent looks at the flop, he takes a quick peek at his chips. If you see that happening, it means that he likes the flop and that he is willing to put chips in the pot.

This is a tell I consider to be very important. In all of the live games I’ve ever played in, it was mostly (if not always) accurate.

You can recognize a loose or a tight player by his or her chip stack. A messy stack is usually an indication of a loose player. He’s willing to take a gamble and will often try to bluff someone out of the hand. Then again, if you see a player who puts his chips in neat little stacks, you’re dealing with a tight player. They usually play conservative and are not looking to bluff a lot. If you are in a hand with this type of player, you shouldn’t call him with a weak hand.
